Occupy Wall Street

Ever since one particular trader literally lost millions of dollars in a matter of hours, articles have been published on just how reckless and even narcissistic the average trader is, and for that matter how unsuccessful they can be. Actually, statistics show that the average trader is no more successful than the average citizen who is not a professional. Some have even compared these individuals to sociopaths, which seems a bit extreme to me.

However, that one incident also triggered something else: a nationwide revolt against Wall Street itself. Millions have gathered in every state for something called “Occupy Wall Street.” Beginning in mid-September, groups marched through the streets, especially directly around Wall Street itself, demanding a change.

Some of these protests have turned violent, with police taking action to stop protestors, using tear gas, shields, etc. However, most have remained peaceful. These protests seem to directly fly in the face of tea party values, and protestors are demanding a new kind of Wall Street leader. They want greater equality in our economic system and politics.

Protestors are asking Washington to take action, to be different. Protestors are asking for true life, liberty, equality, and most importantly, the pursuit of happiness. However, many still say that the movement itself needs stronger leadership.

The direction that the movement is going is currently unknown and unsure. Many hope that it will lead to a revolution, but only time will tell what will truly happen. Currently, protestors want more control of Wall Street and Washington, they want stiffer penalties for certain problem individuals, and protestors want many other things. Some are currently split, in need of more unifying values, but it continues to develop.
